Danzō Kiyohara Papers, ca. 1895-1964

Danzō Kiyohara was born ca. 1881 in Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan. He arrived in the United States in 1894 and attended the University of California. Later he became a businessman in Southern California and was active in various business ventures including oil drilling in Texas and Southern California. Mr. Kiyohara was a member of many Japanese American organizations in Southern California prior to World War II and served as secretary and treasurer of the Japanese American League of Los Angeles (JAL) (ca. 1915-17), as well as secretary and treasurer of the Japanese American Fraternity of Los Angeles (ca. 1913-14). This collection consists of diaries (1906-08), photo albums (1929-ca. 1941), personal papers and correspondence. The collection also includes correspondence and other materials related to the Japanese American League of Los Angeles (JAL), photographs of relatives, friends and members of the JAL (ca. 1910-1964), and postcards. Materials in this collection are primarily in English, with some in Japanese.

The Japanese American Research Project (originally named the Issei History Project) was initiated by Wakamatsu Shigeo, President of the Japanese American citizens League (JACL) in 1960.
